Located in the North West of Russia, close to Finland and Estonia, Saint-Petersburg is a city built up out of the surrounding swamp lands over many years. Previously know as "Petrograd" and "Leningrad", it is Russia's second biggest city, and is close to Finland and Estonia.
One of the world's biggest art museums, the Hermitage, is in Saint-Petersburg, and the city was founded in 1703 by Tsar Peter the Great, on the Neva River. Today it has a population exceeding 5 million people, and is a port city on the Baltic Sea, giving it the ability to truly showcase its status as Russia's cultural capital.
